When it happened to me I was trying to place a portal under him then he got me. I also found out how to get Wheatley to say additional dialogue during the final battle. Wait for him to finish all his lines before you bomb him the first time. It doesn't matter if the white paint pipe is broken or not, but I'd advise to have it broken since he talks for about 4 minutes. If done correctly, after attaching the SPACE core to him, he should say something like, "Are you trying to weigh me down?" and says more stuff.

There is all kinds of additional dialogue. When you get the Adventure Core, hang on to him until the timer almost runs out, then plug him in. Him and Wheatley have a little exchange right before you kill Wheatley.
