if they make the new sdk user friendly i might take a look at it but at no chance that much time this project needs.

As stated, Hammer hasn't changed all that much. I think the last significant addition was the manifest menu, and even that's been in since L4D. I think. Anyway, I'll be honest with you--Hammer already is user friendly. Not in the "Here's a tutorial because it's the first time you've launched it--I'm Wheatley and I'll guide you through your first map" sort of way, but for a single piece of software there's a hefty chunk of detailed documentation (VDC alone, not to mention other sites) and a boatload of tutorials available in almost every conceivable media format.

Hammer's userfriendly, but you have to be a somewhat proactive user.

Note to self: work on replacing MS Office paperclip with Wheatley.

I thought about that too and would like to help mapping.
Unfortunately the SDK is not ported to Mac already

(Sorry for bad English)

One verb tense error? Hey, don't apologize, you're speaking English better than a lot of native speakers.

Seems like you guys beat me to the punch on this one. I don't know why it didn't occur to me that I might not be alone in having this idea!

Here's how far I got. Note that I am a first-timer when it comes to Hammer and mapping, so there's more than a few little hacks and work-arounds that could probably be done in an easier way.

(Back to the forums after a looooong absence, hurray!)

A collaborative cube-shaped map sounds like an excellent opportunity to use the new func_instance and friends.

Each map could be created and updated in a separate vmf file, with one 'master' vmf that func_instances them all in in the appropriate configuration. The only major coordination that would be required, then, is the connection between individual maps.

i just posted this because i want someone to read this thread again because ireally like the idea and i dont want this to get lost

How about, instead of a giant cube, you do it in a giant sphere! Mix things up a bit.

Also how do you plan to use the ceiling doors. Chell is not much of a climber.

"Oh, in case you got covered in that repulsion gel, here's some advice the lab boys gave me: DO NOT get covered in the repulsion gel."

The cube thing would be good for a sandbox game, but why not start a community built campagn maps?

All iterations of the Source SDK are fundamentally equal. There are some tweaks, some new additions, but at the end of the day, Hammer will work the same way it's worked for the past 8 years.

I thought hammer was much older than 8.

It was WorldCraft in the HL1 days and stayed that before 1.) it was acquired by Valve and 2.) Blizzard copyrighted the name "WorldCraft" for the WarCraft 3 editor. Hammer has been known as Hammer since HL2's release in 2004

Spoiler
and before that, since the HL2 leak in 2003
. Hammer is a major improvement over WorldCraft, they're related but it's a stretch to call them the same software.

just giving you a tip OP, telling a idea what you gonna make is not very smart tbh, I mean someone could think, Hey this is nice, lets do it! and then they are faster then you and then they blame you for using there idea
