The free version of fraps is limited to 30 seconds. And the "free"/illegal fraps is illegal so why not try a free alternative, this website has a bunch of free alternatives: http://www.anewmorning.com/2009/01/06/5-free-alternatives-to-fraps/

I bought my copy of Fraps because it's a good application.

Also, it's Australian software, and I was feeling patriotic.

I use Fraps for screen capturing. You can see that the quality is great and worth it Of course you need to edit/compress the video files later.

I use FRAPS for recording. Then I use VirtualDub for editting and compressing to .AVI; it's really simply and intuitive what makes you finish the work quickly
