[WIP] [WIP] Bunnyhop v1.0
Quote from Lpfreaky90 on April 4, 2012, 6:21 pmwell I think this is how a tutorial map isn't supposed to be.
This is "Well, we have those beams, try to get to the other side". If you don't know about bunny hopping or strafing there is no way you will ever find it out by playing this map. I think it needs text or something to show how it is supposed to be done.
For people who can bunnyhop this is easy. For people who can't bunny hop it's impossible (the intended way) so I think this isn't a good tutorial. Try to find a way to make it obvious to players who are new to the concept that it is possible to do.

Quote from mZLY on April 4, 2012, 6:54 pmThe intended route is impossoble regardless of whether you can bunnyhop or not. The only way I was able to complete it without flinging was to individually strafe jump between each platform. Like I said, I think he placed the platforms backwards so you can't just bunnyhop across. I think he meant for it to begin with the narrow, close together, beams and end with the wider, further spaced, beams. xD
And you can't really explain to someone how to bunnyhop with a couple of lines of text, they'd need to watch a tutorial video on YouTube or atleast have someone show/explain it to them first. Training maps are for practice afterwards.
It's fun if you want to fling and hop for a couple of minutes, but yeah... The whole thing needs to be redone for it to of any real use. That being said, I'd love to play a well made version of this idea.

This reminds me of the Portal 1 training maps for flings, peeping and sideways portal ninja jumps etc....nice to see to take advantage of the Portal code quirks, but not really necessary for an excellent map....?I don't think those routes were intended by the creator, I was just demonstrating a couple of ways that the map can still be used for bunnyhop training as it's kinda broken. I think he may have actually placed the platforms backwards, it's hard to tell with his lack of input in this thread, lol.
And yeah, bunnyhopping in P2 is basically identical to strafing in Quake. It's used alongside wallstrafing in speed runs and the like to pretty much elimate the need for slow walking, or even skip parts of a chamber, so maps like this are good for people who want to improve their times or even just get started with bunnyhopping.
On a side note... I attempted the second alternate route again and failed... Again. I've come to the conclusion that it's impossible and if anyone can clear it in three jumps I'll bake them a cake myself.
I know this topic is old but I want my cake. Also I'm not trying to be a jerk but bhop in portal 2 is not "basically identical" to strafe jumping in Quake. The jumping you do in your video is not giving you any extra speed at all (proof in video) and that is not how you bhop. I have over 1000 hours in p2 and more in Quake.
As for this map...it may have faults but the intended route/solution is by no means impossible. It can be done in multiple ways and at multiple speeds. I agree it's a bit odd the gaps get smaller but they are still lined up just fine for bhopping at slow medium or high speeds.
