[SP] Funnels and Lasers

Page 1 of 2Next

The first map I've ever made for Portal. It's a quick, simple one. Oh and criticism is an awesome thing, provide some. (:

Very nice puzzle, and a spoiler free review.

A couple things..

1) Need to clean up those indicator lights, at first glance its a bit confusing. You also need to refrain from putting indicator lights into a portable surface - just bad design.

2) The first button is a little too close to the excursion funnel. Every time I went to press it, I kept being sucked up by the funnel, it was slightly frustrating.

3) The laser inside the excursion funnel deals 0 damage, I don't know if thats by design or not, but it was quite confusing.

4) The longest excursion funnel should have a slightly increased speed. Having to take multiple trips through it just seemed to take forever - but thats more opinionated.

I feel like you have a pretty good puzzle going on, not terribly difficult, but it doesn't give away the solution. Just need to fix those minor things, then goto town on adding all the bells and whistles. :)

This actually happens on a number of occasions in the official maps, just FYI.

Really? Interesting. I'll have to go back and check some of those out - always thought it was avoided.

I have to disagree with most of what he said
1) It might have been a little tiny bit confusing, but i still was able to tell very fast what is what. You know, considering very very few fan map uses those, i was glad just to see them in the first place.
2) What button? You mean the one who creates the cube? THAT was too close? Not to mention you only need to press it once, and even if you get sucked in you can just move a tiny bit outside and you're free to do whatever you want
3) That's not a bug by this map. You might not have noticed it in other maps, but the laser NEVER deals damage if you fly(and the funnel counts as flying) only if you're walking
4) I would have agreed, because same happened to me, HOWEVER the correct solution only requires you to take the funnel twice. In other words, if you(or me XP) had taken our time to try find the solution by thinking instead of trial/error there would be no boring traveling.

As for my own opinion, it's one of those maps where at first i am like "What kind of bullshit is this?!!" and then after solving each part "Okay, now i feel stupid for not seeing the obvious solution"
But i like those maps^^
Only a tiny bit brighter it could have been.

Adding a pretty start/end point might have been nice too, wether you use elevators or other things.
[EDIT]
There is one thing though, a shortcut, or alternative solution...
either way, the orange gel is not needed at all.

Spoiler
I am not sure what was the intend of the gel, but to get to the cube in the other room i merely traveled through the tunnel to the other side. Then, with the cube in my hand, i used the faith plate to get near the exit near the funnel. Then i traveled through the funnel again to the other side, went through the blue-wall-thing exit and stopped the funnel with the first cube. Now i merely need to go through that hole and take the cube. Other than to get this cube i don't see any reason for the orange gel

Needs some tuning up! But when it's done, it will make for a valid puzzle.

Pragmatic ideas: wall tiles aligned to platform borders; why covering the other corridor in gel, I never used it (maybe you should replace the catapult with that); one can just portal to the paint button and exit room (needs elevators), how about requiring the funnel to get there (white walls with grates);

(deep breath)

the little walls covering the second laser receptor might use some love, and why not put the latter a bit distant; an extra puzzle could be about requiring the first cube to get the second, like discarding the alternate long corridor (which you still reach with paint the 1st time) for a button which enables orange funnel (and you either use a 2nd cube, or you can't go back with just 1); sewer water sure has its charm, but remember those coop grinders?

the hills are alive... with the sound of music

Really? Wow, I've never actually been in flight where a laser had to hit me so good to know :)

Also everytime I went to press the button I got sucked up like 3 times, it was a bit frustrating :(

Actually everyone did, at least everyone who played singeplayer-portal2
remember the room with the 3 faithplates, and you have to deactivate walls so you can reach the next one? There is one laser there(Which you need to redirect) and everytime you jump with the faith plate you hit the laser, however if they were to deal damage you would get hit and fly down. That's the first time i noticed and it was proven by several fan maps.(this is quite a nice tool to avoid avoiding lasers XP you just need to jump through them)

This map has some potential, but as pointed out there are some issues with the purpose of the orange gel, I can see how it was to be used, but with an excursion funnel there is no need. Maybe put up a barrier and you can't traverse to the end?
Have something at the end - note or something? I look forward to more maps, thanks for creating.

Please make the steps shorter so you don't have to jump 5 times to get up (short enough to just walk up).
