Restrictive gaming makes me sad
Quote from phalcon16 on May 22, 2011, 2:01 pmSo far, Portal was much more fun for me than Portal 2 has been. The campaigns have both been fantastic, but the extras, as of yet, hold far more replay value for Portal. The challenge maps are where it's at. Speedruns. Set challenges. Objectives that call for much more creativity are what allowed me to keep going back, and trying to find faster routes and such. I'm desperately awaiting such things from Portal 2. I know the games hasn't been out very long, but after such a long wait for the release, I admit I'm surprised at the lack of preparation. More bugs still need to be sorted through.
I guess I'll just have to wait until some decent challenges are added.
My second worry is that authoring tools will never be added for Macs. I mean, I bought the same game that pc gamers did. I paid, expecting the same perks and such, yet I'm missing out on an ENORMOUS piece that people with Windows get. I understand that reworking it to make it available for Macs would take some time, but seriously? Why was it not set to release tools for pc and Macs at the same time? Again, I paid just as much, yet the mere fact that I'm on a Mac means that I can't access those tools, and that's REALLY getting on my nerves. maybe you won't get as many people making maps on Macs, but I know I have just as much creative ability as your average Portal player, and if the tools never come out for Mac, I may just as well have rented the game, seeing as the campaign takes maybe 7 hours to complete.
Long story short, I feel cheated out of a major part of Portal 2, and I know I'm not the only one.

Quote from xdiesp on May 22, 2011, 2:11 pmThe extras in P1 were dlc, day two situation was just as ours now. With one difference: the modding community has immediately been active for P2!
Personally I haven't seen any bugs. As for the easy puzzles and white walls hunt, I agree. But P1 wasn't entirely innocent of this either (behind the scenes = hunt). But take in account the COOP puzzles, those are awesome and harder.

1) wait for a mac relese
2) run windows on your mac using (Parallels Desktop,VMWare's Fusion,Apple's Boot Camp.)
3) install a program like Crossover Mac or wine(http://davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/)
to make your mac be able to run windows exe's

Quote from Nacimota on May 22, 2011, 3:19 pmYou weren't cheated. It is your sole responsibility as a consumer to research a product before buying it. Valve never promised the tools would be available on any platform other than windows and when asked about it directly they said that it would not happen within the foreseeable future due to the many windows based dependancies the tools rely on (among other things).
It's important to remember that Hammer and the rest of the SDK are not officially supported products.

Quote from Hober on May 22, 2011, 3:54 pmValve not shipping Hammer on OSX isn't "restrictive", it's realistic. Making software takes time, and Valve only has a certain amount of man-hours to put in to projects. Sure, they could put 5000 hours (five people for six months) in to porting Hammer to Mac, but to what gain? By porting the Source Engine to Mac (no small feat, to be sure), they gain more sales. The number of sales to be gained from Hammer on the Mac doesn't come anywhere close to the $250,000 in programmer salaries alone (5 programmers, $100k/year, 6 months) to be worth it.
And, yeah, as for bugs... what bugs?

Quote from Jomonay on May 22, 2011, 5:24 pmI hate how people these days have to have someone else to give them some challenges. For instance, in the original Portal I spent a fair while trying to get the green energy ball in chamber 19 to GLaDOS. I didn't get an acheivement for it. Use some of your own creativity for god's sake.
Also, lately I've noticed "gamers" bemoaning developers for lack of an aspect, then organising petitions to get the respective developer to do more work for free. This kind of entitlement bullshit is exactly that, bullshit. They can't do everything. Also, you have learned one of the many huge problems with Macs. Congratulations.
