Reflection gel
Quote from protoborg on April 2, 2013, 8:40 amCan anyone tell me how I can get purple gel, aka reflection gel, into my map? I know somebody managed to create several Old Aperture themed maps which relied on the purple gel. I would rather not have to go fiddling with the code since I have no idea how to fiddle with code. If it is as simple as downloading something, I will download it. I will also be willing to make whatever I need to in order to make the purple gel work.

Well, it has an absense of colour more accurately
...due to the fact that it was not finally intended to be one of the gels in the final release of the game. So it is needed to edit its particles' colour like some others have already done. But it is true that, IIRC, all the maps I've played used the purple colour

I did search first. I couldn't even find a relevant level as the level in question is in the workshop. Regardless, that thread would be helpful if what I was looking for was to make reflection cubes. Well, "helpful" is being generous since the thread never actually tells you how to make the laser bounce.

Anyway,

You're probably thinking of the actual purple gel. What I was referring to is not an existing gel. It is a custom gel that some enterprising person made for their map. The "Sticky", or purple, gel is actually different. The sticky gel makes it possible to walk up a wall. The Reflection gel reflects laser like a mirror.

You can always decompile any of the maps to look into them, or ask directly to the author. That thread should be useful for you because an example map has been posted, not only including a painted cube, but also reflection gel itself.
Apart from that mappack, I have played the following two ones you can find in the workshop:
Reflection Intro
Reflective Dilemmaprotoborg wrote:Again, you are thinking of the "sticky" gel, not the reflection gel.No, I know what I'm talking about and so does RectorRocks, this is from the wiki (when talkling of the paint type):
1 : Stick (scrapped wall walking paint; no effect in the released game; retconned into laser-reflection gel in dlc1)
So since DLC1 that IS reflection gel, ok?
Cheers!

Quote from FelixGriffin on April 2, 2013, 4:28 pmI'm working with a different Adhesion Gel at the moment, so I should probably change the color if many people are using purple reflective gel. Which maps would those be?
Since the colors of various gels are linked, I'm making a little "control room" map that will let you choose the color. Exiting the map and choosing a new map will provide the necessary reload.

Quote from reepblue on April 2, 2013, 4:50 pmWas gonna do my own reflection series, but I got bored of it quick. The gel was suppose to be silver so I could have gotten away with the gel splat using the conversion gel colors courtesy of Valve.

The more you give, the less appreciated it will be received.

But above that, I apologize if somehow I made you feel not helped or something... I sincerely felt horrible when I checked yesterday that you went to one of those workshop maps I linked you to and I saw that you posted for help there. Man, you don't have to go out of these forums asking for help, ok? This is what they're for and we're here for, k?
And I think you'll get better help here than from any mapper you don't even know...
This is what I did: I went to THAT thread, downloaded what Spworl had posted, checked, tested, etc. And then I woke up early this mornning and made a test map for you very basic (it's in the attachment).
Let me explain a bit:
1. As we told you, in order to have reflection gel, you only need to set the Paint Type to 1 for any of the entities:
- info_paint_sprayer
- Paint_sphereBut in order to make it even easier, I used just the paint_dropper instance from the /p2editor folder inside your sdk_content/maps/instances folder, and again I set the paint type to 1, ok? Just select your preferred no. of blobs, size, angle etc.
2. As I mentioned above, due to Valve dismissed this gel for the final release of the game, there are no materials for these gel blobs, so they should appear bright-white-looking (lack of texture). Now you only need to take any of the existing gels' textures and edit them changing the colour, looking or whatever. the only important here are 2 things:
- The name of the files. If you check inside the materials folder of the zipped file I'm attaching you'll see 2 folders "paint" and "paintblobs". I directly used all textures that Sprowl courteously posted in that thread
(Thanks Sprowl! Good work!
). Check the name of the files inside the folders. It's important to use the same names in order to let the paintblob shader find them and use them (they appear to be named similarly to the rest of gels' textures but using the word "stick" instead
). You can edit the vmt files to change the colour the textures will have in game. Check also that there are a bunch of textures inside "paint" folder for the bridge in order to look painted in the case this gel reaches any.
- To pakrat those files inside your bsp: If you check and test the bsp map I attached in the zipped file (BEFORE placing the content of materials folder I'm attaching into your portal2/portal2/materials folder) you'll have no problem in seeing properly the blobs that fall from the paint_dropper since I used pakrat to embed the files in
You'll have to do this manually, not automatically, ok? If you have any problem to do this part just ask here ok?
I hope you find this information enough for a start! Do not hesitate to post whatever issue you may encounter, ok?
I hope to see a reflection gel map from you soon!
