Porting Portal 2 features to other Source games?

Page 1 of 2Next

Anybody know if it's possible to port some of Portal 2's features, like the goo, or linked_portal_doors, to other Source engine games such as HL2EP2 or L4D2? Just think it'd be cool to use these features in other games.

Not possible. Valve would need to add them into the relevant games/engines. Gel is possible in the Alien Swarm SDK, but I don't know if linked portal doors are there or not.

Nope, no coding for portal 2 so no code to add to mods for other versions of the engine.

The goo, though, is relatively easy to do in other engines, unless you mean the flow-map features. I'm pretty sure those are a custom shader valve wrote for portal 2, so again, no porting possible.

Hear the turret, for it is knell. It summons thee to heaven, or to hell.

I think they might be in L4D2 as well. Not sure.

I have an additional question along these lines. If it's not possible to bring Portal into Half-Life, what about the other way around? Could you have a gun in a portal game? human enemies? Is that even slightly possible?

No, and honestly it's a good thing because when Portal 1 had weapons and enemies people just created useless maps where you shot at them and didn't do anything even slightly portal-related.

Fair enough. Thanks for the reply. I was more interested in the player getting shot AT than doing the shooting. "Crap! A dozen Combine just came around that corner! I have no ammo! Oh, wait... I have a PORTAL gun and they're standing on a white floor. HMMMM."

I do remember a part in Hetzchase Nailway whereas there was a Aperture vs. Combine scene that you observed from a window. Other than that, it pretty much all stunk.

In theory it would be cool, but when you actually try to make it you realise that the NPCs don't react to portals, they can't see or shoot through them, and they are rarely able to fall into them.

I made a map where you could drop bombs onto a strider, which was fun for a short while, but on the whole the NPC and portal thing was just too limited to be useable.

Noted. I'm tossing vague story ideas around in my head, so I'll just scratch that subsection off the list.
