Portal 2 Co-op Vehicle

Page 1 of 2Next

Would it be possible to create a Portal 2 vehicle? Has anyone ever tried making a Portal map with the HL2 dune buggy for instance? I'd like to make a game model for a Portal 2 Co-op vehicle. This would be a fun co-op mod I think. One player could drive the vehicle and the other could ride on the back (sorta like the Warthog in Halo) and create the portals as the driver maneuvers obstacles and ramps. The mechanics would be pretty fun, and it encourages cooperation. I'd love to brush off my modeling skills to work on designing the vehicle model that fits in the Portal universe. Im thinking something like a NASA lunar rover, but with more muscle. If it's feasible, would anyone be interested in developing such a mod?....You know, for Science!

I believe the HL2 jeep models, or any unused model, from HL2 or any other game, is not included with portal 2.

However, i have seen a few examples of vehicles that have been built entirely in hammer. Not in portal though, it would create some brilliant teamwork games.

I would think any vehicle to put in Portal 2 needs to be small but also easily movable. I see what onyx86 is saying about Halo's Warthog, that could possible work. However, my only concern is if there was a vehicle in Portal 2 then the test chambers would have to be extremely big so the players could move around with the vehicle.

Crazy is as crazy does.

given the size of the portals, it would have to be a motorcycle or something equally narrow. or you would have to change the size of the portals. maybe create an "Aperture Science Mounted Portal Device", that shoots rectangular portals. the possibilities are endless :D

Having a vehicle in Portal would be both stupid and complete nonsense. This is a puzzle game, not a driving simulator.

Not to mention that vehicle physics/code is incredibly laggy in Multiplayer in Source. The mod Synergy basically had to rewrite the vehicle network code from scratch because it was complete trash.

Indeed.

Yeah the 4 seater Buggies was rad. Me and 3 friends drunkenly drove along the coast one evening a couple years back, it was great. I can't count the number of times we lost control and took a dip into the drink.

What if it was a spherical device, like a hamsterball.
That way you dont have to worry about landing upside down or traveling sideways through a portal.
Also this would be much more precise to handle in physics puzzles where the chamber reacts to the vehicle.
Another advantage of a spherical vehicle is that it wouldn't "clip" through the portal edges and look ugly. (like putting a cube halfway through a portal that is at ground level)

The layout could be similar to how violet and dashiell in the Incredibles movie manage to run around in that forcefield sphere.
Though now there would be one person "driving" the ball, and another one shooting bigger portals.
With the hamsterball, you could also add some animated gimbal construction to keep the seats/mounted portalgun orientation level while the outside sphere is rotating around.

I guess that if the vehicle had a diametre of just under 128 units, and the "vehicle portals" being able to fit onto a 128x196 slab, you could create some awesome puzzles with that.
Having a 120x120x120 sized ball would also still maintain the current scale of all the test chambers, no need to acomodate a monstertruck.

A last advantage would be, because it is such a unusual shape for a vehicle, you could design something completely aperture sciencefiction styled.

No, not really.

But I've experimented with prop_vehicle_drivable entities in Portal 2 and they don't go through portals so maps with vehicles are out of the question anyways :(
