Portal 2 Authoring Tools Video Tutorials

Page 1 of 2Next

On my youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/SkwittGaming I am making a series of video tutorials for making test chambers on the new beta authoring tools. I plan on making tutorials of the full Portal 2 SDK/Authoring Tools when they are released. The tutorials will start from the basics of portal 2 hammer editing but not on the basics of hammer so you will need some but not much experience with the hammer editing tool. Please check it out and subscribe of you learnt anything from my videos, thanks in advance.

How much experience do you have with Hammer or with Source?

I hope these will actually be specific to building portal maps, rather than a hammer map (that just happens to have portal elements).

Will you cover actual level design relevant to portal?

The risky thing about announcing your making a tutorial series, is do you actually know how to make the maps currently? You might figure out ways to accomplish things, they may not be the correct way though.

Walking when you have a portal gun sucks.

Something that bugs me is how long it takes for you to make a room. Just make a big cube, hollow it with a value of -16, and then ungroup.

Another thing that bugs me is the way you make entities. When you click the bulb icon, at the very right, you will see a list that says "info_player_start". Change that to choose which entity you want.

@above, he made a tutorial for buttons and doors. That's pretty relevant to Portal 2.

Yeah hallowing is a bad idea. It's fine and all if you need to quickly seal something, but you should always just make the geometry by hand. When you get to the later stages you could easily copy your geometry that seals the area into a new map.

Also you do realize that selecting ents via the class menu is easier and faster right? You can open up the pull down box, and just press a key that indicates what letter the ent class name starts with, and you'll automatically see it filling it out for you. This is also extremely useful when working with inputs and outputs.

Currently working on Darksiders 3.

I felt this way when I first started mapping but within a few days of practice the tools will start feeling more and more natural and things will start to make sense. As MrTwoVideoCards said, do everything by hand. It'll end up a lot neater and help you out in the long run.

thanks for the responses guys, I will be making more specific tutorials about portal level design but i wanted to first bring as many people as possible into portal 2 mapping with the official SDK with basic hammer tutorials for portal elements before I get more advanced.

There are some very good video tutorials for making maps with the new authoring tools beta here:
