New Tools?

Page 1 of 2Next

I hope the new Tools mentioned in "Portal 2: The Final Hours" won't completely push this site out of the way. It will most likely create a flood of low quality maps on to their supposed map browsing area, and if we were to post any quality map there, it would be drowned out and wouldn't even be noticed. Plus, this seems like it will just end up being like the fake "in-game map maker" that has no optimization, no complicated I/O, or anything. Does anyone else have anything to say?

I think there was already a topic about this. Oh well, it was dead anyway. I'd like to see what the new tools look like.

Crazy is as crazy does.

A. I started the other topic and it wasn't about this.

B. They'll probably be grossly oversimplified and lend themselves to nothing the source engine is good for. Honestly, if the Source Engine isn't optimization, I don't know what it is.

Well, I'd want to at least see what the tools look like to compare them to Hammer.

Crazy is as crazy does.

I dont see anything 'wrong' with hammer. Its only really as complicated as Photoshop, once you get to know it, its really easy to use.

I totally agree with you iWork, however it looks very complicated when you first start it, which scares people.

Like with photoshop, there are a hell of a lot people sticking to programs like MS-paint, just because photoshop looks so hard. Though you can create a better image with photoshop.

I HOPE a very easy map making thing (say something like the MS-Paint for portal 2) will let more people enjoy making maps and trigger SOME people to start using hammer, to create the effects they cannot get in the easy/new map maker thing.

So I think the tool won't be interesting for any of the people on these forums right now, since it's just easier and faster to create more complicated maps with hammer. But for beginners it can be an introduction to portal 2 mapping, which can be interesting.

But my questions are these:

A. Will we be able to put maps from Hammer that we make into their "Map Directory"

and

B. Will the TWP "high quality" maps be able to be somehow rated and over time be viewed more than other maps?

Here's the Kotaku article, along with a picture of what it may look like. Of course, Hammer is much more versatile, but it could help the noobs get their basic map ideas out there.

Try out Twin Pillars, a Portal 2 map by BOB74j.

Thank you, SO very much. It really needs this. Also a test chamber 'entity' would be good.

It looks like a kid version of hammer, though I like the cartoon style they made it like.
P.S They are planning to host maps, maybe another dlc or update soon?
If those people made a low quality map, they might upload it to thinkwithportals.com
A quick upload to the website button in the menu, maybe?
