Favorite theme

Quote from Nacimota on May 26, 2012, 1:52 amContrary to popular opinion, I'm actually not a big fan of old aperture. It feels very makeshift and lacking in style. One may argue that a lack of style comes with the time setting, but I don't think that is the case. Bioshock, for example, is a game that executes a 40s/50s art direction with some serious class.
I'm not at all saying I hate old aperture, mind you, I'm simply suggesting that it isn't as mind blowing as so many people claim.
As for my favourite theme, I would have to say overgrown. The juxtaposition of straight, rectangular, artificial surfaces with the rough, random and beautiful organic influence of nature is (in my opinion) almost perfectly executed. It's the first theme the player encounters and thus it needs to have the veneer of Portal 1's chamber style while actually being quite different. It feels both familiar and and foreign at the same time.
It is truly an example of art direction done right; it still surprises me that I am one of the few people who feels this way.

Quote from Brainstone on May 26, 2012, 7:43 amMy favourite theme is definitely overgrown, followed by the bts theme. I also don't like Old Aperure, it is somewhat too undesigned.

Quote from KKiONI on May 26, 2012, 1:23 pmQuite a hard decision. All of the themes are great. Though I do have more of a liking towards the overgrown and clean Aperture style.

It's all "Destroyed, Reconstructing, BTS, Old Aperture, Wheatley Aperture" I don't like to do just "Clean" theme because it's pretty much just a bland level, not much detailing.
My favorite styles to map in would have to be either destroyed or wheatley aperture for the two very different styles of destroyed test chambers. In Wheatley's it seems very futuristic and dynamic, while in destroyed, the overgrown nature theme, as well as broken, tilted panels and grunge makes the atmosphere very interesting.

I think, the test participants who tested in the Old Aperture area had a portalgun. A sign in the game shows that. I made a screenshot of it.

It was once passable without one, but since the place is all broken now, you have to use portals.
