[WIP] [WIP] Time Travel -Map 1 finished-
Quote from RJK 616 on May 20, 2011, 11:34 pmBasically a concept map.
This is the introduction chamber, released as a seperate map because it's far too large to add an extra chamber to it. Theres no puzzle Per say, but the next map will feature some. As i said this is the introduction on how to use TT to get to the goal.Basically the premise is to travel to and from the future to solve various puzzles. It's abit ambitious for a amatuer like me but hopefully it'll turn out good
Graphic bugs - No draw texture in one place (Not a problem really) and odd lighting on one set of debris. These probably won't be fixed as compiling this map takes a decade on my PC

Quote from Ruien on May 21, 2011, 12:17 amI like the concept; very cool
I'm interested in your fundamental concept of portals. Do you picture them as space-portals or are they spacetime-portals (including some constant time offset which is normally zero but may not be in this map)?

Quote from RJK 616 on May 21, 2011, 12:57 amI have no idea what your question means xD If you're asking whether portals persist through time, i don't think it's possible due to the way you 'time travel' unless portal transporting is possible

Quote from Thursaz on May 21, 2011, 1:13 amGenerally, portals in both Portal games are space only, despite that they should be technically spacetime... But hey, it's not like 'Quantum Tunelling Device' is an accurate name, either. xD I suppose what Ruien is talking about may be interesting in the map.
That said, I do like this idea. It'd make for really interesting puzzles, to say the least. |3

Quote from Ruien on May 21, 2011, 4:57 amWhat I mean is placing the blue portal on a wall in the "future", then hitting the button and going to the past, and your blue portal remains in the "future", thus you would be able to go back and forth through the two. Of course, if you shoot the blue portal again, the time difference in the spacetime portal would shift back to near zero and you'd have the normal "space only" portals again.
It's just a metaphysical way of explaining the logic behind being able to portal between the old and new rooms, if you did indeed want to design puzzles based on that concept. (And, it's more accurate to the metaphysical theory of portals. Although as Thursaz said, it's pretty clear that standard "Portal" portals are space-only).
On the other hand, if you do think of portals as "space only", then you would fizzle all portals whenever someone hit the time travel button. Since you did not, however, actually fizzle portals in your concept map, I am thinking perhaps you are indeed toying with this idea.

another solution for making the portals space only is to make the player change portal linkage ID depending on the Time location.

Quote from RJK 616 on May 21, 2011, 3:28 pmI decided to release the introduction chamber as a seperate map because it is so huge in scale and the compile times take upwards of 2 hours even with optimization.
It has a few graphical glitches like a nodraw texture partly showing above the door and some debris is lit oddly, but i don't want to spend half my free day waiting for it to compile again x3
The next chamber will be an actual set of puzzles!
Regarding portals persisting while you time travel, i don't think it's techincally feasable tbh. Objects are a different story though

Quote from tactical fluke on May 21, 2011, 9:47 pmgreat map
there was a bit of floating debris in the future part, but i really enjoyed playing it.
keep it up

Quote from Thursaz on May 21, 2011, 9:58 pmI did sv_portal_placement_never_fail, so I assume that you mean the moment someone lands in the 'past' or whatever time they're NOT supposed to currently be in, they get transported back? You could actually do an interesting puzzle with this mechanic in that a player might have to avoid stepping on the ground of the alternate time zone (eg using cubes) though that would be a bit tedious.
