[WIP] [WIP] Co-op: Gel Escape
Quote from boom.headshot on May 14, 2011, 4:45 pmMy first ever portal 2 map, it's a short co-op map set in the destroyed aperture science testing area. It's still a work in progress and some textures might not be aligned right, and some light might be iffy, but I have tried to not make it look like crap, so I hope it's alright.
I think the puzzle is about medium difficulty, hopefully it won't be too hard, or too easy.
I would really like feedback about the map, as it will help me become a better mapper.
v 2.0 changes
A new puzzle added to increase difficulty and lengthScreenshots:

Quote from Thursaz on May 14, 2011, 7:01 pmThe map didn't take me too long to figure out, so you might want to tone up the difficulty a bit. I wouldn't consider it medium. Easy-medium, maybe. It's not at all a bad map, though!
1) I'm assuming that the dead end of a corridor is the end of the map. If so, there needs to be a proper end.
2) The reason I say this is easy is because the solutions are fairly obvious. Two tiles and a fizzler imply using an infinite loop, etc- Try making your puzzles a little more subtle. If a room is more complex, with more sub-puzzles, even the more obvious puzzles might take a moment or two to figure out- Or think of novel ways to solve puzzles. Add more portal surfaces as red herrings, even. It's up to you, but there are many ways to increase the difficulty of a puzzle. Right now, with the limited number of objects in each room, it doesn't take long to figure out.
3) Spreading the gel is more tedious work than puzzling.
4) End needs an indication that door will only open when both bots are standing there.
That said, the map has a lot of merits on its own. The map, regardless of its ease, was fairly fun to play- The mechanic in which you spread the gel was interesting, if a little tedious to carry out. It's really not a bad map for your first Portal 2 map- Especially as it's coop. I think you forced the partner issue fairly well for a first map.
Quote from boom.headshot on May 14, 2011, 7:10 pmAlright, thanks for the feedback, I've had friends test it back when it was just a bunch of poorly textured walls, and it was anywhere from being easy to solve to, one of my friends gave it a 7 on a scale of 1-10 for it's hard-ness. This is just a WIP and wanted to make sure the the puzzle worked before trying to add a dissassembler. I also need a little more detailing. And I think I might modify it to have a couple smaller puzzles that you have to complete to actually move on... But thanks a lot for the feedback.
also, how did you spread the gel?

Quote from Thursaz on May 14, 2011, 7:25 pmYeah, different people are going to find it on varying scales of hardness. It depends on how experienced your friends are, though I wouldn't give it a 7 for difficulty, heh. I'd still say it's a good map, though!
I spread the gel using the funnel to carry it across to the other side, then shifted the funnel position to bring one blob of gel a little further, rinse and repeat until it's lined with propulsion gel, then just spread the end with repulsion gel and the funnel.
If I did it the wrong way, then oh well. xD

Quote from boom.headshot on May 14, 2011, 7:40 pmyeah, I think I might have to somehow highlight the better way of dispersing the gel...
How you're supposed to do it is have one player get the funnel to bring the gel over to the platform, then the other puts a portal on the wall so that the funnel will go through it, then puts their other portal on the wall to the left, that should create the runway for the propulsion gel.
Quote from Thursaz on May 14, 2011, 9:59 pmI see. Yeah, that's much better. Count that off as criticism, then, and put it down to me being blind (and too lazy to get the second player down when he was already up there, haha- Was playing by myself, so it's annoying to move the players back and forth.)

Quote from boom.headshot on May 17, 2011, 1:10 amSo, I took some of your advice to heart (no really, I did!) and decided to add another puzzle that will eventually unlock the rest of the puzzle, which is the same as the the last version, I really like this puzzle that I came up with, so hopefully you will too...

Quote from boom.headshot on May 17, 2011, 10:19 amI'm pretty sure it's the right one... It has the same map name, but this version is about 1.5-2 mb larger

Quote from Thursaz on May 17, 2011, 10:49 amAh, I see the problem- The console was loading gelescape and for some reason not reading the (1) part behind it. xD The new puzzle is pretty fun to solve, actually! Difficulty's medium, I'd say- Took me a bit longer- so I'd say good job with the new puzzles and map overall. |3
