Vitrified Mod Beta Release!

Page 1 of 3Next

Hi Everyone,

Last fall, I taught a class in level design at the University of Baltimore. We used Portal 2 to create this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LM01iSUtJKc

Download is here: http://www.portal2vitrified.com

It still has a few bugs, and we're working on swapping the player model, but it's fully playable and all of the dialog is in.

Please give us some feedback!

Looks awesome! Downloading now...

EDIT: For a big mod like this you might want to use the Sourcemods directory. It's much, much easier.

Falsi sumus crusto!

Looks great indeed, although the Cave Johnson impersonation felt weird, I would rather see a new personality then one we already know. Feel if you are making a new story, why have a character who is not Cave Johnson acting like him?

Feels like it is the voice of what a normal AS employ's voice would be, and I think the personality should reflect that. Anyways going to download later, cant wait to see some interesting puzzles.

Looks like it isn't compatible with a Mac?

Hi Everyone,

I just discovered a major bug with one of the maps. A replacement can be found here:

http://www.portal2vitrified.com/puzzleadventure.bsp

The download itself is being re-uploaded and should be available in 15 minutes.

Candoright - He's of the same era as Cave Johnson and worked with him, but has a pretty different personality.

rock_n_rage - Sorry, it won't work for a Mac because you have to use a batch file to launch it with specific command line instructions. There's probably a way to accomplish the same thing on a Mac, but I wouldn't know how to go about doing that.

My opinions:
This could have been such a great mod :/... too many things were done wrong though. I had to stop playing before I could finish it. Way too many doors. Absolutely misleading. Stretched/misaligned textures everywhere. Lots of wrong textures in places. The tests felt so, so weird. Really dark. Confusing. They were like normal Portal 2 tests, except broken, bigger, and darker. It seems like a lot of people who worked on the mod haven't had much experience with Portal 2- they just grabbed a few ideas from it. I really hate to give this a bad review, since I can't do much better.
The guy talking is just horrible. You can barely understand what he is saying. He talks really quietly and quickly. Sometimes you can't hear him because the other sounds muffle him. I found a way to fall through a lot of things with no collision models. You can crouch under things you were suppose to run into. I'm sorry if you were going for a "different" type of feel from Portal 2, but I couldn't enjoy. I tried, but I couldn't.
Tests weren't even tests. Tests were way too big for the small puzzle inside them. Something you did that is REALLY bad: Added a delay for the door to open when a button is pressed. If you quickly jump on the button, it will stay open, therefore you don't need the cube.
I want to continue to see what else is in this, but I can't bring myself to.
Just patiently waiting for msleeper to come over here and tell you that there is no such thing as Portal 2 mods.

Sorry you didn't like it Cobra. It takes place in 1971, so Aperture is busy ramping up and remodeling after a decade of minimal operations. Most of the team thought that Portal 2 led you by the hand a bit to strongly, so we made a little more exploration necessary. That concept fits well with the theme of test chambers that are broken and/or undergoing a remodel.

I love the voice acting, but I agree that Slater is too hard to hear in a few places. That was something we really struggled with. Soundscripts seem to be ignored no matter where you place them. It also seems like Portal 2 lowers the volume of other sounds when GLaDOS or Cave Johnson are talking, but I can't find any information on how to make that happen. Any suggestions?

It's decent, but there is a lot that could have been better.

General:
- The soundscape in the first couple of hallways are kinda off. Sounds much bigger than it actually is
- It's hard to hear the voice in some instances
- You need more autosaves
- Why are there buttons that releases nerotoxin... Seriously?
- The lighting is awkward. There isn't enough light in some maps

Maps:

- The first 2 puzzles repeat itself. All you do is put a cube on a button, twice...

- The second repulsion gel puzzle is just repetition of previous puzzles
- The exit door in this chamber isn't triggered by the button, if you get up there the door opens when you get close to it

I haven't played longer than that. Might play through some more and provide some additional feedback.

Never use Logic to solve a puzzle, he's an idiot...

A lot of it looked really good and was done really well. But it just felt like this: You grabbed a few ideas from the original Portal 2 and built your own version of them. They don't feel like tests. They're just giant broken rooms with a few test elements dropped in there. At first I was confused by the red button with neurotoxin, but then I saw the "If you see the orange jumpsuit, press the red button." Still not a good idea though, just gonna make people angry. Lots of things were done nicely and better than I can do, but you just had the wrong idea when making this.

There's something wrong with the content type of the download. apparently it's

content-type: text/plain

where it should be

content-type: application/zip
content-disposition: attachment; filename=file.zip
