[SP] SKAoD - Scary Killer Arm of Doom

A boss fight map I've been working on for a while. I mostly focused on map functionality rather than the look of the chamber, but I hope that it is visually appealing enough to keep playing. If you are stuck, there are hints and more information on the workshop page, but it is supposed to be more of a Learn-the-tactics-while-playing kind of map. Also, blind runs and/or feedback welcome, this is my first boss battle I've ever made.

I was able to press that button on top of SKAoD in the second stage- flung up to the power generator by applying conversion gel and doing a P1 double fling, then walk across. The button didn't do anything, I thought it was a bug and I had to read the hints to realize the true solution. Make it more obvious - maybe a sign saying "Power Generator" above that thing. And, add a block or a laserfield or something to stop me from pressing the button in Stage 2. Wonderful map though.

I ran into heaps of problems; here's my blind playthrough:

Thank you guys for some legit feedback! About the button, I'll probably fix that with some signage and check/X indicators.
I also appear to have forgotten to build cubemaps, as shown by the pipes and RPG turret. The missing textures on the combine balls can be fixed by having beemod , hl2 files, or the energy ball pack in your game. This is also written on the workshop page. The collision after pickup glitches can't really be fixed without redoing the way it picks you up completely, so sorry for the inconvenience there. The energy ball launch pattern can be observed while running around the map, or while pressing buttons. As for not knowing what to do, this map is supposed to be a sort of learn it as you go kind of thing, and if you can't get it, look at some of the hints I have provided in the lower area of the workshop description. Again, thanks a ton for the helpful feedback on this map.

I didn't read the description, just subscribed.

The thing is that this is totally new and every step is totally new.

If you look at portal 1 bossfight:

Spoiler
- the rocket turret has been introduced before
- the incinerator has been introduced before
- glados basically tells you what to do the first time around.

Portal 2:

Spoiler
- You have been introduced to gel
- you have seen a white gel tube explode
- bombs are quite self-explanatory
- you have handled a core before (Wheatley)
- You pressed the stalemate button already

These things greatly help you to solve the bossfight. If you give the portal 2 bossfight to someone who hasn't played portal 2 yet; or maybe only some old aperture levels with just the gels, without the other steps, he would probably have a lot of problems with it! But because of the steps being explained earlier on it makes it a lot easier.

As for the missing materials; you should really pack that into your bsp!

Yea, I don't know what's up with me and the pink shaders/textures, its happened to me even when I pack every material I need for something, with or without building cubemaps. I know that if I re release this I do need to remember to build cubemaps though, because I saw the weird reflection glitches on the pipes. The combine balls I tried to pack but failed at, so I'll try again.

Also, its meant to be hard, and you're meant to die a bit, but usually it is in the name of science, or it is to show you what to watch out for

I got really frustrated playing this map. I got constantly knocked around by something, but the arm wasn't right next to me. Sometimes I switched into speed-walking mode, but I couldn't figure out why. I couldn't enter the only portalable surface I found, so I figured "okay, the arm has to fling me up to the next level", but it didn't always work out and I got knocked down a lot, so it was a bit annoying. Then after pressing all the buttons I didn't have the time/brain capacity to realize that I had to brake the tube - which I didn't even notice with all the running around I had to do. Then I got flung up into the ceiling and got stuck in it. At the same time the tube broke, but I didn't see it, because I was trying to get out of the ceiling. So after some pointless running around I finally noticed the white gel, but the arm always got me before I could get to it. Then I ragequited..
So I guess this is a challenge for smarter and especially more patient people than me.

Also, what's up with the exit button right at the start? I can exit through the menu, I don't see the point of having a button for it. And it does say what it is, but still, a simple minded person, such as myself, would press it anyway, just to see what it does. So right at the start I exited the map... :P
