[SP] Retro Puzzles: The Bank of Zork

Page 1 of 2Next

I wanted to see if certain puzzles from classic games would make sense in a newer medium, with fancy graphics for everything. This puzzle makes just about as much sense now as it did in 1981 in my opinion. The Bank of Zork's magic curtain seemed to fit nicely with FR's Surface Division Fields. Enjoy!

The map could only look worse if it was -fullbright. How are you releasing this? There are nodraw surfaces everywhere. There are ERROR models everywhere. Filling the screen with bright green text almost game me a headache.

I didn't bother trying to finish the map - I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

Seriously. Wow.

Oh no...did something go wrong with the upload? The map looks fine on my screen, even when I play from the Workshop.

Could you post a screenshot on how it looks for you, so I can see what materials or models are missing? I thought I had included all the custom stuff. And there definitely shouldn't be any nodraw, no matter what files are missing.

Hopefully that's all it is: I like seeing what people do with new concepts (I'm actually working on one of my own).

Here are some screens: http://steamcommunity.com/id/sevensc/screenshots/?appid=620

OH. Now I understand. I forgot, I used hallways from Portal 1, but there must be some non-Portal 2 textures in there. I used the Content Porter so I didn't notice.

Looking more closely, it seems to be the non-light ceiling tile and the metal door.

Reuploading now. Sorry about that.

EDIT: There, try it now. That should be better.

It is better compared to the screenshots, but I did still see one model error above the "vault" under the diversity vent. Also, I noticed that some of the screen text was clipped off on the right -- but perhaps that may have something to do with me playing in 16:9 aspect ratio. I've never played Zork, so I can't compare it to that in terms of gameplay, but it was an amusing, if disorienting, way to pass a few minutes.

Thanks! I mostly wanted to see if this made more sense presented graphically. It didn't, so I helped the player a bit by leaving the world portals visible--in the original game you had to say WALK THROUGH SOUTH WALL to get back out of the Small Room and WALK THROUGH NORTH WALL from the Vault, with no indication why you would ever do that. And saying NORTH or SOUTH wouldn't even work, it would say "there's a wall there."

The screen text is clipped for some people, but not others. Did it go off the screen, or just randomly stop at some point on the right side?

I'm not sure why there would even be a model there, but I'll check...oh. I used a 256-unit vactube that I didn't pack in, the tube was supposed to go all the way to the Vault. Fixing...

It just stopped at some point on the right side (but it wasn't random, it stopped at the same distance from the center in all cases), but before it reached the side of the screen.

Is this map a joke?
