[SP] Paintbox 01
Quote from thehermit2 on June 5, 2011, 9:13 pmMy entry for the TWP Summer Mapping Initiative.
Since I haven't done any mapping in a few years, for my first Portal 2 map I wanted to do something short to help shake the cobwebs off, and that highlighted my favorite underused game element, conversion gel. So here's a black metal box with a white gel pipe. There's an excursion funnel, too; I'm sure you'll figure it all out. Also I added a small BTS area for anyone who feels like exploring. Have fun getting to it.
This is my third posted map for the Portal series.

Quote from xdiesp on June 6, 2011, 5:45 pmProbably the most ironic white-gel-based map yet, which appropriately starts almost completely black. And better: city night black, all tron-y and stylized.
In the end, white paint is about making your own playground map: this one, at least, isn't as naive and puts its rationale to it.

Quote from quatrus on July 4, 2011, 7:45 pmTook me a while to figure out I was supposed to paint everything....The solution then was straightforward. A really unique paint map... thanks for creating.

Quote from thehermit2 on July 16, 2011, 4:59 amThanks, quatrus. I'm glad you liked it.
When I was playing through Portal 2 the second time, I started making a list of things I wished the developers had done. Besides simple things like "either make a railing that the player can climb over, or else put up cages or fences." This map represents the first two things off the list.
Number 2 was "make a proper test chamber based around white gel where the player was both able to and encouraged to paint the entire room." It ended up becoming a puzzle where figuring out how to paint the room was the puzzle.
Number 1 on the list was
"make a behind-the-scenes area that you reach by flinging yourself through a cracked glass window."
So the run is not perfect and may not use only intended ways, but maybe it can let you see how other people may understand the map or you could just enjoy someone playing this map for entertainment.
Anyways, here is the recording:HIBik4dPHVo

Quote from thehermit2 on July 26, 2011, 5:47 amThanks for posting that, Djinndrache. This is the best kind of feedback I could have hoped for.
It looks like overall the map was frustrating. There may not have been enough visual cues to lead from each stage of the puzzle to the next. For instance, it took a while before the platform with the superbutton was located. This was not supposed to be hidden, just difficult to reach.
I'm thinking the map could be made a little more playable by adding some signage and some more windows. For instance, arrows around the paint dropper pointing in all directions. A series of arrows pointing up towards the superbutton platform, and maybe a partial glass floor through which the superbutton could be seen. Also a window on the ground floor that the player can see the exit through.
Ultimately, though, the map is intended to be finished by learning a few new ways to move paint around. I'm a little concerned that you only figured out one of them and had to resort to a well known exploit to reach the superbutton, but I think that is going to have to survive on its own merits.
One last tip:
if you press the button that drops the cube again, it changes the background music randomly to one of several preselected tracks
. I know when I get frustrated, an endlessly repeating soundtrack starts to get on my nerves. That makes me think maybe the pedestal button and the cube drop location should be switched around, so the player has easier access to the button and has to work to get the cube.
Once again, I can't thank you enough for posting this. I hope everyone is looking at the videos you've posted of their maps.

Quote from KennKong on December 14, 2011, 8:29 pmThis is almost a playground map, but it does use portal redirection in a way that is usually reserved for laser puzzles. Still, I'd rather be a player than a painter. Just 3/5, and removed from playlist.
