Question about Portal 2 3D skyboxes

If there are no skybox models in the original Portal 2 files (besides the crane), how did anyone make a 3D skybox without Zivi7's models?

Well, you can always use geometry to make hills and mountains and big buildings in the background. Valve also has some silhouettes of test chambers that they used in chapter 9, seen behind Wheatley's final chamber, and periodically throughout the chapter. There are also a few textures like cranes, that are used in skyboxes for the underground and the wake-up scene at the beginning of the game. Besides these though, you would need custom models for the 3D skybox.

They basicly made a lifesized skybox built around the chamber?

Yes, you don't need models for the skybox. Quite often where valve used skyboxes in portal 2 it was already quite far away where it wasn't such a problem if the skybox was less detailed.

What valve also did was putting in the silhouette models in the skybox, as a 3d- skybox!
