[PTI] Gel Test
Quote from madcat1030 on May 24, 2012, 1:33 pmStarts off with a relatively simple Speed/Jump gel puzzle, leading up to my first attempt at a conversion gel challenge.
Feedback is appreciated!

Quote from Logic on May 24, 2012, 3:02 pmHave you playtested this map? Honestly? I broke every single part of the test on my first playthrough. I know you don't think that way when you're the one designing the test. But this was ridiculously easy to break.
The first chamber is horrible. I tried completing it the intended way. It doesn't work 99 % of the time, even though I've put the gel on the right places. I'd love to see you solve it, because getting this puzzle to work is hard as hell. I understand the floor pattern of the room, but it just makes it tedious to move around.
The second chamber is equally annoying. The fact that you need the gels so far away from their source makes it frustrating to complete this part. You don't need the orange paint at all, you can just bounce between the walls with the blue paint. In fact, you don't even need the blue paint since you can just do what I did in the video.
The third chamber contains the least amount off bullshit, but it's still easy to break and not that interesting to play.
You need to start thinking with portals and actually playtest the maps before you release them...

Quote from madcat1030 on May 31, 2012, 11:53 pmAlright, first off, I did test it, but I kind of knew when I released that one that it was going to be a little vague and, I'll fess up, unnecessarily complicated, and somewhat crappy. It was my first experiment with more than simple uses of gel. And it wasn't too good. The first chamber, I like what you did, totally don't mind it at all, I'll upload a quick run of how it worked for me. I wouldn't have kept the puzzle if I couldn't have solved it consistently.
Chamber 2: I actually revised that once by making the goo hall longer, to keep you from doing what you did, but I forgot to move the fizzler forward to block you from portaling all the way across. The main challenge of that chamber was getting into the tall corridor while still having a portal under the conversion gel, which converting and then repulsing the small goo-room to get across without portals. The challenge was the fact that you needed the repulsion through to another room. I'mma go fix that fizzler tomorrow morning.
Chamber 3: Yeah, a little simple, but I wanted that whole clean area at the end as a stark comparison to the rest of the map. And I don't think you broke it, you just bypassed two laser receptacles by doing something of equal (or for some players, I'm sure, harder) difficulty.
I am least proud of this map, but I wanted to release it just for this purpose: Feedback. So thank you, hopefully my next map with gel will be better for it.
I might do a re-release that is the second chamber alone, just cleaned up and made a bit nicer, because that's the real puzzle of the map.

It sound like you know what you're doing. Fix the test chamber up a bit and really try and break it next time. Playtest the shit out of that map and it'll be unbreakable next time
