[PTI] 8-Cube

First try of a hopefully challenging map with a unique twist.

Notes:
* The on/off button does not work all the time, just press it again in case it didn't work the first time.
* The solution might be difficult to execute, but there is a certain trick to it, that makes it much easier!

Changes:
v1.1: Added lights and made horizontal fizzler broader to prevent an unintended solution including throwing cubes over the fizzler
v1.2: Removed lights to make space for an added observation room, which makes planning ahead easier.
v1.3: Removed two portable surfaces and added a vertical fizzler to the horizontal one to prevent more unintended solutions (Thanks BlumCoLe!)

I made some slight changes:
* Made the horizontal fizzler broader to remove an unintended solution that includes throwing cubes onto the stage.
* Added some more lights

I would like to hear some feedback and whether you thought finding the solution was challenging

Also here are some pictures showing the solution:

The difficult part here is to build the lasercube-cross and the trick is to use 2 cubes coated with orange gel as a base and push them out afterwards. Thanks to the gel they will slide out nicely without moving the other cubes (At least most of the time, it does not work as great as I hoped but well enough to still get through with this idea)

I really like the idea but the amount of cubes and lasers made it horrible to play. I burned myself a million times. I stopped playing after getting two reflecto cubes to the upper area. I realised my setup was wrong and I had to restart again. NO WAY I'm doing this again. :D

When I watched your solution I was surprised that the idea and concept is so good... In my opinion it would have been enough if the player had two reflectocubes and two lasers for the final setup. Maybe with 4 normal cubes and you work out a little side puzzle with them. Like it is right now it is a bit too much for me.

Anyways thanks for creating and please don't feel dicouraged by my words. Continue mapping, I'm sure you'll come up with some great ideas.

Cheers

Thanks for your feedback!

To make the cube setup easier, I implemented the constant on-off switch for the lasers (which I actually had quite some difficulties to come up with until I found a solution by accident ^^. Then I even included a delay element to make the activation of the elevators smoother.)

But I guess you can still get burned easily at the upper area, espeacially at the stairs, thats true.
(Although you can use your remaining cubes to protect yourself)

I also understand that the amount of elements seem a little chaotic at first, which in a way was intended. But I see that this way of increasing the difficulty is not exactly the fun part of solving puzzles, I will keep that in mind! Initially I wanted to make the map even more complex and convoluted, but I already reached the element limit ^^

Anyway, thanks for playing!

Edit: Also, if I understood you correctly, you didn't notice that you would need the two standard cubes at the upper area until you already went through the hazzle of setting up part of the solution? If so, then this element of surprise was also not intended. Maybe I could include an "observation" room with a window beside this area, so that it will be easier to plan ahead. Although it would already be possible to explore that area in advance by using the cubes as stairs. (But I guess most people might just think that this would not be necessary and therefore will not use this option)

Latest Update:
* Added observation room to allow for better planning ahead

Hey dude,

I love Portal and want to collect some gameplays (first blind runs; always aren't the fastest and intended solutions, because I take any time to look at the map and its possibilities), speedruns and bug reports.
My records should help you to understand how the player thinks.
Well, I hope I can support you with my uploads to fix any bugs and make new awesome maps.

Here are yours!

opinion & comments: after 45 minutes in a "try and fail"-session, i realized, that I can't find the intended way. now I look at your solution screens and :notwant: ...I'm so dumb, great map!
It's hard to have no chance to respawn the cubes manually. :/

THX for mapping... Keep it up!

PS: Please play my map und and let me know what you think.

Wow, that's a little bit embarassing ^^.

Spoiler
I made the horizontal fizzler longer to prevent throwing the cubes over it, but I did not realize at all that you can just carry them over it; now I feel stupid ^^
I added a second, vertical fizzler now to prevent that.

I was aware of the infinite momentum trick, that's why the ceiling is black, but I missed the small tiles in the tunnel. It's updated now.

The other little trick to get the cube into the side tunnel was not intended; I thought it was easier to just throw it but each to their own I guess ^^.

About the missing cube respawn button, that was actually part of the trick! If you got your cube stuck in the laser tunnel, I wanted you to look for other means to either retrieve it or destroy it (namely by throwing a blue geled cube in the tunnel, which will push any stuck cubes and itself into the fizzler or it will push them out the other way)

Anyways, many thanks for playing and making a glitch video!
