Portal 1 maps?
Quote from Maurus on July 14, 2011, 7:44 amHey everyone. n00b here who is thinking of learning how to make levels using Hammer.
I've got a question - this is not a request, but I've kind of been looking around for something like this and honestly can't find anything, so I thought I'd ask -Have there been any attempts/efforts at recreating Portal 1 maps in the Portal 2 style? In Portal 2, I mean, I'm not talking about a texture mod for P1, I'm talking about *maps* in Portal 2. I mean, We see a couple of them, complete with updated/retconned assets, in the Portal 2 campaign, but they're in their "ruined" state. So has anyone tried to make "clean" versions of these and other Portal 1 maps?

Should be no big problem converting all the maps, but it would need a lot of time.

And, in practice, as you learn Hammer, it gives you ideas for new puzzles, and you end up making those, which turn in to interesting and new maps, instead of just recreating puzzles that everyone has already solved.
So, recreating test chambers as a learning exercise from either campaign is a good place to start with Hammer. But I'd bet good money that by the time you are skilled enough to fully recreate one of the Valve chambers, you also are skilled enough to make interesting, original maps that are more fun to play.
