New to mapping, need help with small issue...

I'm new to mapping but I know all the basics, I know how to create rooms, add entities etc. etc.

What I can't seem to figure out (even though it seems like such a ridiculous thing), is how to change a single section of - a wall for e.g. - into a material which allows portals to be created on it, whereas the rest of the wall is solid, 'non-portal creating' material.

I've seen the basic tutorials on texturing as well, texturing itself is not the issue, I just can't seem to figure out or find out how to just apply a texture on a certain area/'square'/'unit' of a wall or surface.

It seems to me to be a really stupid thing to get stuck on but I've drawn a blank and I can't seem to think of anything or find it anywhere, is there anyone who can quickly sort this little problem out by helping me?

Would be much appreciated ^_^

I don't think you can place portals on overlays and you can only apply one material per surface, so you'll need to divide the wall into smaller brushes by using the clip tool. It's handy to use the third clip mode (click the button or SHIFT + X three times) so that both sides of the clipping plane are kept.

Thanks, solved the problem for now, I guess there's no short cut to it, but I'll keep looking for a quicker way for a while ^_^

This is the method I started using back with Portal 1 mapping. I think it works pretty well. It is tedious work though.
