Multiple Security Camera Monitors?

Hi all,

I just wanted to ask some questions about security camera monitors that has been on my mind a very long time, I just thought maybe I should ask in this forum.

First, I saw maps in portal 2 that had monitors with different displays on each one, but when I tried in 2 of my coop maps I could only make the monitors display 1 camera view, and the names of each camera and monitor was different, yet the engine just ignored the names, and displayed the first camera feed on all monitor displays.

So I am just curious how and if we can do this, does it require custom script that would need to be added to the bsp once it is compiled to make them work, because I did ask a few mappers a few months ago and they said the portal 2 engine was limited to just 1 display, but I saw maps in portal 2 with more than 1 :(

if anyone can help please do, it is something I always wanted to know

EDIT: I just did a search in the forum, and I can see there was previous threads with this same question to which the reply was it cant be done :(.

But I just was sure I saw portal 2 maps with more than 1 point_camera entity though :( maybe I'm getting mixed up with different games and my mind is playing tricks on me :P.

You can have 2 so long as they aren't on at the same time. Either a button toggling cameras or clever use of triggers should do the trick if you need 2 or more.

I know we can have 2 if we toggle them, I did do that in my old map.

My idea was a security office like u see in other source games where there is loads of displays with different camera feeds.

I was just sure I saw this in a portal 2 map once, maybe I got confused and after playing other source games cos of my age (not getting any younger) I got confused and mistaken it for a portal 2 map :P

Depending on the security footage, you might be able to fake it with custom textures, possibly animated.
You could also try having one screen that swaps between the different areas in a loop.

My stuff:

Try using Bink videos for the screens that the player won't be interacting with.

Thanks for the idea - Lpfreaky90 also said the same to me in the past about custom textures, I just forgot haha, then she reminded me on mic today :)

No because you cant pak them in the bsp, they would need to be pre-cached (Lpfreaky90 said this)

maybe the custom textures is really the only way.

Valve will never change it now cos source 2 is coming out so the limit will never be changed now :( it is a shame though.
