How do i make my doors look nicer

Hi i just installed hammer and started trying to make a map today.

i started of with a fun little test with a small room and a few turrets just to get the hang of hammer. It was a good first run and evrything worked ok for the most part.

i have been trying to make a door to walk thru nothing fancy and it took some work and learning but i got it to the point were i push a botton and it opens up so i can walk thru it.

I then put it in the wall pushed the botton it opened but there was a wall behined it.

I later learned that i needed to put a hole in the wall so i could walk thru it using the carve feture.

Well that left a pretty choppy hole but atleast i could get through it....barely...but hey its my first day with hammer what did i expect lol.

Is there a way i can smooth it out a little and get it looking like a true door. like the quality in the actual game?

There are instances for a door frame, it is in the instances folder in sdk_content
Look for Door frame
Or if you want use the door frame from: zoo_mechanics.vmf

First of all. NEVER CARVE. It creates many unecessary badly cut brushes (even micro brushes which are bad for your map). If you didn't use the carve tool, awesome. To me it sounded like you used the carve tool to make the doorway.
Secondly, what spongy said. There are instances you can use for the door frames around a door model.

I don't know if this is too advanced, but i found a door hole in an instance. Then i went to edit the instance and then copied the door frame in that instance. Now i made i new instance and put the copied doorframe inside there, so i've always got a door frame for my maps

I think that's a bit tricky if you have all kinds of triggers. I prefer to use a doorframe prefab.
(In case you don't know what a prefab is: it's a bunch of objects/brushes that can be placed as a whole in your map. Instances are more or less the same, but if you edit the instance, you will change the thing you changed in all maps where that instance is ;))

Since I have various textures that I use as doorframes. (inside/outside different, or just different styles per map) I think for me prefabs are easier ;)

i found the instance you were talking about.

It looked nice. the only problem was when the door opened up i go to walk through there is an invisible wall and im still stuck in the room.

also there are a bunch of nodraw areas on it.

So when i put the door frame into a wall i dont see the door frame i just see through the wall.

P.S. Someone said something about a door hole instance? where is that located?

did you clip a space in the wall for the door frame instance to go into and delete the wierd wall behind it in the instance?

The instance itself is weird. When you double click an instance, there's and "Edit Instance" button on the lower left part of the window, press it and copy only the brushes that are supposed to surround the wall, then paste it in your map. Hope this helps.

Instance: Co-Op Tube Ride

I usually select a door instance, place it in my map, and then collapse it to make edits. For me, it's the easiest way to make doors, although it may not be the best method. If you're a fan of Portal 1 doors, then use Spam Nugget's great Portal 1 Door Instance. It's a great instance, I recommend downloading it. :)

I made an instance that is edited from the door frame instance and made it so it would have a small black tile textures on it instead of nodraw. I used this instance for some of my more recent maps. If your still having trouble getting a proper door frame to work, I could sent you my instance.
