Hammer corrupting Portal 2 files with Steam
I'm new to Hammer, and honestly, new to any type of game creation/tools.
Long story made short: I love portal 2, love the in-game map creator, I have, however, read of the Hammer tool while playing other player created maps, and have truly wanted to make more involved maps.
I installed the Hammer tool, watched a few Youtube videos, and followed along step-by-step. I tried to test the game, with the F9 button, and Portal 2 wouldn't load past the intro Valve and Source video(basically Portal 2 would no longer load up, even with exiting all programs, restarting my pc and simply trying to start Portal 2).
I have spent, quite literally, the entire day just trying to fix this problem: Verifying Portal 2, 52 errors, fixed(loads up and is playable). Now Hammer will not load. Steam/tools/hammer, broken? Verified tools/hammer: 57 corrupt files..fixed. Portal 2 now not loading? OMG!
I have searched and searched all things Portal 2/Hammer related, and finally realized that either i'm just stupid or impatient. But! Yes, there is a "but!", I finally found that by logging into steam (after a reboot, not sure if that was needed!) Verifying (in Steam that is)both the Portal 2 game, and the Portal 2 Tool Beta, without ever loading either until both had been verified, worked for me.
So there it is, for anyone else like me that have now gone bald over one day of simply trying to create/make/enjoy the game/hammer tool!
Sorry for the long post, I hope that I haven't made too much of a nub mistake, and i hope that others that have had the same experience will find this helpful.

Pretty much, always verify BOTH before launching anything. And usually verify the game before the tools.
This happens to me anytime there's an update, since I run Steam on 2 different PCs, one updates the game, and then the other asssumes I have the update and breaks everything. It's annoying but luckily easy to fix.
