General Texturing.

Does anyone know of a far more comprehensive guide on best practices for texture mapping created objects. For instance, I'm trying to create a 'door decal' in a metal wall. As it is now. I have to create the wall, carve out a blank piece, put a door sized block in place, put a door texture there, then tweak and tweak and tweak the size of the block till the texture fits just right.

Yeah..... that's how ya texture. I wish I could say it were simpler than that.

The best rule to follow is this:
Make your brushes fit your textures, don't make your textures fit your brushes.

Using 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, etc. as your brush dimensions will make texturing far easier. However, there are some textures that are just odd: "standard" doors for example are something like 56 wide and so don't fit nicely onto a 64 X 96.

Just keep at it, and use the don't "fit" button unless you really want/need to. Otherwise, the justify buttons are your best friends: a simple center or cornering (left then bottom, top then right, etc) will make most textures align great so long as you made your walls on the grid with the proper dimensions.
