Easy to launch vpk?
Quote from ColorCubeMan on August 24, 2011, 11:55 amHi,
I'm creating a map pack including scripts etc., so the best way for me is to create a vpk. But I think it can be complicated to launch it for some users. When I play a vpk map pack, I think it's still easier for me to open the vpk with gcfscape and launch the map from there (by opening it with the portal2.exe)
Of course using the console is a more common way, but if the maps are inside a vpk, it appears that the console doesn't autocomplete the name of the map, and even refuses to load it.
I could also include with my pack a script that would modify the extra menu (as seen with "A little Higher map pack"), but I heard it can conflicts with an existing custom extra menu.
So, what's the best way to release my pack?

Quote from Lostprophetpunk on August 24, 2011, 12:05 pmThe problem that you occured when the vpk refused to load, is probably because you had Portal 2 running, put the files in addons folder, and then tried to do the map.
With .vpk files...after you have placed the file (if you have Portal 2 running), you need to type into the console 'update_addon_paths' and hit enter. Then you should be able to load the map.

It's the same with every vpk I installed.
PS: I've never been able to load up the console in the main menu. I have to start a new game and then I can open the console. But I don't think it's important.

Have you got them placed in the correct folder? I assume you have but just in case.
The name of the .bsp file within the .vpk should be the name of the map when launching.
Which .vpk are you having trouble with, maybe pm me the file and I shall test it through my Portal 2.

Quote from ColorCubeMan on August 24, 2011, 12:48 pmOh well, I just found out it was because I have the sixense dlc. In that case, the user has to create the addons folder in Steamsteamappscommonportal 2portal2_sixense
It works fine now. I can create my pack without worrying.
However, you should fix your guide. I noticed this mistake: the "addons" folder should not be created in "portal2/maps" but directly in "portal2", and of course in case of a sixense user, it should be in the other folder called "portal2_sixense".
See this page for more information, in the "installing the vpk" section: http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Releasing_A_Portal_2_Map
Thanks for helping anyway.

Quote from Lostprophetpunk on August 24, 2011, 12:57 pmAh, I didn't notice it had the 'maps' folder in it. I myself have it in the correct location. Sorry if I didn't notice it before, causing the confusing. I shall update it later for those sixense dlc people.
