Customizing Elevator Rooms
Quote from Paradoxic R3mix on March 3, 2012, 12:37 amHello, it is Paradox, once again. How do you "customize" elevator rooms in Hammer? I'm talking about the ones like in 12 Angry tests, that one that is Old/New aperture style. And also how some have certain screens and props, do you customize it by editing the instance and saving it as a new one or what? ; how do you customize it so only one panel of the screens shows the video? And finally, Are there any tutorials out there for making one from scratch? I mean the base, not the logic. Thanks!
P.S, I searched on Google and the forums, but did not find anything, so please don't hate me for my fail googling, I can just kill myself.

Quote from Spam Nugget on March 3, 2012, 1:47 amJust open up one of the base instances, save it under a different name, and stuff around with it. simple as that. If you want only one panel showing video, i think you should just delete the other video enities (cant remember what theyre called, there will be one at the bottom left corner of each screen). And there probably arent any tutorials to make one from scratch, what would be the point? Just stuff around with the instances you have.

I think in terms of boolean variables. Generally, it makes things easier.

Quote from Jexim on March 3, 2012, 4:27 pmTo be honest, I like making things from scratch too, taking instances that already exist seems lazy to me, and the way I see it, the MORE you understand about putting something together from scratch, the MORE you can make it into whatever you want. The best way I've found to do this is a rigorous round of reverse engineering on one of the actual portal 2 maps, it takes awhile, but I've learned SO much through even little things (like lift platforms) that apply to everything else I work with and have allowed me to come up with ideas and fixes for a thousand other things.
What I'm saying is, if you wanna know how to do it from scratch, I APPROVE d(^^)b, and just load a portal 2 map, (decompile if necessary) and slowly pull it apart piece by piece till you understand it. THIS IS NOT EASY, but if you really wanna know it, you'll take the time to do it.
