Custom animations and models?

Hey guys, I'm relatively new to the modding scene and portal and portal 2 are the first few games that have actually got me really interested in making my own maps. I've been using 3ds Max and Hammer off and on for the last few years and while I have a know the basics of how to use the Source SDK, I do have some major gaps in my understanding. I've been going through the portal 2 .vpk with GCFScape and looking at the panel .mdl's and animations with the model viewer. But I am wondering if there is a way to import the models into a program like 3ds Max, create custom animations, and then use the new animation in a Hammer map; or even make completely new mdl's

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I'm new to the map making community and couldn't find find any specific information on the Source SDK Wiki.

I too would like to know about this topic. Headless_player.mdl looks like it could have some awesome results if yo could make custom animations.

As far as I know, its probably easier to model animated models inside a model program that is made for Source than it is to model in 3D Max as it already has compatibility with formats and animation scenes.

There would be plugins for Max, though its probably very simple.

Try Maya (SMD exports available), Blender, Milkshape (supports Source) or G-Max (plugins available for Source files).

Also remember that if you just want to create a model with no animation, you can use Propper. It is a model compiler that works straight through Hammer.
