[Coop] Laser Tower

Page 1 of 2Next

This is my first complete hammer map ever (besides learning the basics back in the counter-strike days), and it is therefore a relatively simple map adhering to the "Clean" theme. Evenso, myself, and the few test partners I've had, find the end result to be both fun and challenging.

There are two chambers in the map, and it should take about 10 to 30 minutes total to complete (depending on your combined wit, and more importantly: how much you fool around).

The first chamber features several turrets, that will need to be shielded against, while you figure out how to get through a deadly discouragement field.

The second chamber is more asynchronous; after a small puzzle involving an excursion funnel, the players will be split up making communication and timing very important.

Remember you can hold Tab for your partners view, also the timer tool (accessed by holding F) will likely be needed!

Extra challenges for those bold enough:
* Complete the entire chamber with neither you nor your partner getting scrapped.
* Knock down every turret in the first chamber.
* Bring the very first weighted cube with you to the room with the Aperture Science Laser-Powered Sphere Relocator.

Great map! Not too long or too hard, great design with a very innovative puzzle. I like it! :D

Some parts required a bit of timing and it took us a few tries to get those done, but it didn't become frustrating. Also, I approve of the Aperture Science Laser-Powered Sphere Relocator!

Remarks

Spoiler
At first, the redirection cube didn't spawn when we first reached the cube dropper. After looking around and trying to get the first cube upstairs, we went back to the dropper to find that the redirection cube dropped while we were screwing around. No idea how it happened though, I'm not sure if I can replicate it.

We didn't need to bring up the first panel though, when you go over the first gap with the funnel you can still shoot two portals to get your partner in the funnel. This is how you'd do it the first time to get the cube but I assume that in the indented solution, you'd use the laser and the panel to get across. Not that much of an issue though, it doesn't really break the puzzle.

I'm glad you liked it!

The redirection cube is set to spawn a few seconds after one player enters the lower of the two holes in the glass. It is not as obvious as I would have liked, but it is a somewhat minor issue.

The first panel (numbered) is mainly there to make sure people know how to proceed after grabbing the redirection cube.

Thanks for the feedback though

My friend and I quite enjoyed that map. It was professionally developed.

However, we might have found an exploit:

Spoiler
in the second chamber, after I got my friend over the pit to the room with the excursion tunnel beam, he managed to grab the redirection cube by putting a portal on a random white wall and on the white wall behind the cube, instead of using the beam. I'm not sure if this was the intended method, because I saw the cube was a little forward away from the wall, but if you jump + spam "use," you can grab that cube.

Good find, never thought of that! I don't think it is possible to do every time however. The cube drops in a somewhat random manner, I've even once seen it bounce into the fizzler below :P

I will test it out a little to see whether it needs a fix.

EDIT: It was possible to use this trick about 2 out of 3 times, so I decided to fix it. Also made the redirection cube spawn a little faster.

I really enjoyed the making of, and the many tests you subjugated me to do on this map

Very cool.

Spoiler
I only was a bit confused about both floor switches (bridge and panel).

I agree actually. It seems natural to think they're on a timer, even without the ticking sound. There are some simple solutions, but it will have to wait until after the competition.

Gimmicky map based on split second events, border-exploit mechanics and top of the line punishing. You've got to be kidding me: that one at the first bridge must have been the worst anything I've played in 300 portal 2 maps. The funnel above ranks second.

*realizes this is in the competition*
:sigh:

the hills are alive... with the sound of music

I'm playing custom maps and record my first time of playing them. So the run is not perfect and may not use only intended ways, but maybe it can let you see how other people may understand the map or you could just enjoy someone playing this map for entertainment.
Anyways, here is the recording:
