Compile Error (Please Help)

hi,

i was doing fine with my map up until an hour ago, and i was messing about with a cube dropper multiple normal and edited the cube inside the cube dropper instance and renamed the instance to cuberdroppernormalmultible1, anyway, before i did that, my map was compiling fine, but i deleted the cube dropper and i am still getting this same issue, i really really cant work this out, it just keeps saying this...................

and the thing is when i delete that overlay it says and try re compile, it just then comes up with another overlay, then so on and so on and so on, i cant do anything now in my map until this is fixed, i didnt do a backup grrrrr, damn im upset :( was really enjoying this, and now i cant work this out, i also tryed going to map/check for problems, and it came up with some, and 1 of them showning up is (no player start) i really dont understand this, i have not done nothing other than add things, and i havent touched anything for this error to start

please please please respond fast with detailed help so i can work this out

This is a misleading error. I have gotten this error when making my lightmap scale too low. Did you recently change those? https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Lightmap

hi, and thanks for the reply,

I havent touched any of the lightmap numbers in the apply texture screen, i also just downloaded that bsp file decomiler, and it worked and i got a version of my last working vmf file back, but that vmf file now has everything ungrouped :(, so now i will have to pain stake re group loads of things :(

i dont know how to fix it in my origional vmf file, i do not think it is to do with lightmaps, i havent touched any of them they are all set at 16, when i click on all my surfaces everywhere

please please can you help more

ok, i just deleted a few wall pieces i added too before i did the copy and edit of the cube dropper and when i deleted those 2 portable wall surfaces the map compiles, but i am getting some new yellow messages about lighting and stuff,

but at least now my map compiles again :)

EDIT: also a new thing i noticed, it seems to not be saving my outputs for some of the triggers and buttons, some it still has them, some have been deleted, i hope this doesnt keep happening, will be a pain to keep adding them again :( :(

something strange is going on lol, it was fine a few hours ago, now im getting all these problems :(

There has been a lot of people who have been getting errors by exporting from PTI and editing in hammer. LuckyRJ, if you have done this: may god help you.

I've only ever had that error once and it was because an overlay was on many faces (definitely not 66 but more around 10). I would go to the position the compile tells you and delete it. If you really want a poster there, try reducing the number of brushes on that wall.

this map i am doing is fully in hammer, i am not using PTI anymore, i am doing everything in hammer, you will see when this map is released that it is entirely in hammer, i have and am putting a lot of work in this map, and it has a lot of nice elements and a bit of fun too and some surprises, im actually shocked at how fast i am learning hammer, i was going to start a long time ago, but when i installed hammer and looked at it, i thought wow this looks complicated and didnt bother, then when PTI was released and i saw it and used it, it made me learn hammer lol, so now i am still learning hammer fully PTI is no longer needed lol :)

so anyway, back to the problem, my map is compiling fine now, accept i keep getting yellow messages about lights, but my overlays keep disappearing, and my overlays for the indicator lights are too, i think my map needs a complete overall and to edit it and get rid of the junk and maybe this will help my overlay issue, but because of the way i made this map, making all walls manually and stuff, it is actually very messy, but i know from future maps that to make a room and make it hollow hahahahaha, so lesson is learned from this map, but like i said it is my first hammer map lol, i think my map is actually nearly done, just gonna finish this room and sort those overlay indicator lights out and do exit then upload it for all to see and play, and i really hope i get comments on this one, because on my PTI one i uploaded i had no comments :(

Beware the yellow light messages! They can screw up your lighting big-time. Make sure you NEVER have more than 2 named

Can't you only have 4 lightmaps on any one surface?

All brush surfaces have lightmaps. Increasing or decreasing them will change the sharpness of light and shadows hitting them. Lower lightmaps are sharper, higher are more diffuse. You can change the lightmap scale inside the texture application tool (Shift+A). However lower lightmaps also increase the map size - quite considerably if used on a large or lot of surfaces.
