Can't get .vpk maps to work?

I have tried a few .vpk maps and the game can't find any of them. I put them in this path exactly, copied and pasted:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommonportal 2portal2addons

Just putting the vpk file in there should work, right? and then just load the map just out you would load a bsp one?

Trying this in co-op, btw. We have played many bsp ones which have worked fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: forgot to mention i found a similar problem posted, and tried updating paths as recommended and ensuring that system and trusted installer both have full permissions on the addsons folder, which they do.

I'm having the same problem! BUMP

Did you guys see the thread already running. Its was like literally to threads above this one.

I saw it after the fact when i used search, but none of the solutions there have helped so far.

I've found a solution! To hell with .vpk!!!!!! Use GFCscrape (.exe distributed by Valve? maybe) to remove the .bsp file from the .vpk and then put that in maps directory and VOILA!

I've done everything every thread has said to fix this error and still nothing. So I'm just going to rip out the maps and play them that way.

The whole point in a .vpk is that you can just dump an individual file into a folder and it automatically (virtually) puts the files in the right places for you. VPK's are mostly useful for large map packs, seeing as you don't need to individually pack custom materials, scripts etc. in each .bsp, saving space and making it easy to install for players.

There must be some weird way to intall vpk's, seeing as Valve has done it with the DLC.

I'll just go around pasting this here so ppl can start modding. It's actually a great solution because it also gets rid of the problem of having to use exclusive game files and modding them.
