Adding voices with subtitles
Quote from morrock on June 15, 2011, 6:28 pmHi, first post, lurked for a decent amount of time though. I'm working on a portal 2 mod with a character who speaks through a PA, just like GLaDOS or Cave Johnson. I'm wondering what would be the best way to do this, how was it done in Portal: Prelude?
I know I can do it as an ambient generic, but doesn't that also keep sounding playing when the game is paused?
And how would I go about adding subtitles to the game?

Quote from rossman231 on June 15, 2011, 7:06 pmGo to the Valve Developer Wiki, which you should always go to first when you have a mapping question, type in "subtitles" and hit search. This quickly leads you to http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Closed_Captions which conveniently answers all of your questions.

Quote from morrock on June 15, 2011, 7:54 pmThanks. Sorry, I did exactly that, but I typed in "subtitle" instead of "subtitles." As you can see, that makes a big difference, heh.

Quote from CosmicD on October 29, 2011, 5:45 amthere is a file captions_english.txt in there but it only seems to contain captions for effects, the subtitles are somewhere else and I have yet to find it. Would be cool to be able to add subtitles to my mod.

Looks like they gave up before even putting in the closing bracket on the title. Such determination.

I think in terms of boolean variables. Generally, it makes things easier.

Quote from reepblue on October 30, 2011, 12:03 pmI did this. And believe me, its a mess. I remember I had to manually config captoncompiler, make a new subtitles english folder, then backup the scenes.image. If you don't back up subtitles_english/scenes.image, your game will break, and GLaDOS/Cave, will no longer work

The more you give, the less appreciated it will be received.
